About West

West is a 3-4 year old Cavalier/Poodle mix who came to us with some behavioral issues he needed some work on. To be honest, we have not seen most of the behaviors, even after several months in foster, so it may be he needs a very specific situation to be successful. For full transparency though, we want potential adopters to know he came to us for being dominant with the other dog in his home, guarding his things, and barking at strangers/chasing them. What we have seen is a dog who LOVES other dogs, especially dogs who will play wrestle and chase with him ( we have a fun video we can share) and a dog who is eager to make friends with new dogs coming in. ( He will sometimes forget his manners and hump a new dog, which we get after him for). He has been very friendly with every person he meets, and everyone who comes into the foster home-- kids, men, women. He loves walks, loves car rides, and was excellent for the groomer. He does lift his leg inside occassionally still ( working on it) and is crated and calm when home alone. He has shown some mild resource guarding, so we have taught him to 'trade'... if he has something we want, we offer a treat, and he happily trades it. It has been pretty minor, but he also reads people well, and knows who isn't going to allow behaviors and who might. West is not a dog for a soft personality, but he is a dog for a kind personality who enforces boundaries, can laugh at mistakes as he learns, and love his joyful energy. He requires a yard and another playful dog in his home, as well an adopter committed to working through behaviors if they arise, but even more so, creating an environment where they never do. We adore this dog, and he is very easy and fun to live with, in the right home. Love alone is not enough- he needs rules and limits also.
