Others in Need
If you haven't found the dog/cat for you in our Dogs for Adoption or Cats for Adoption pages, we suggest looking here. The dogs/cats listed here are not Homeward Bound animals; rather, they are animals from individuals' homes or found as strays that we want to help but just don't have room for. We want to help these animals find their forever homes and we hope this visibility will help them find a home. Since the animals here are not part of Homeward Bound, they have not been temperament tested by one of our volunteers and we make NO guarantee as to the health or temperament of any of the animals on this referral page. However, we do require that all animals listed here have been spayed/neutered, are up to date on their shots, and on heartworm preventative (this pertains to dogs only).

If you need to surrender your pet, please go to How do I surrender an animal to Homeward Bound? on our FAQ page. If we are able to list your animal on this site, we need to see a copy of the animal's current vet record to verify that s/he has been spayed/neutered, up to date on all shots, and that the dogs are on heartworm preventative. We will be happy to post the dog/cat in need for as long as it takes but if we don't hear anything from the owner for 2 months, we will assume the animal has found a home and will remove him/her from the site. If you choose to post here, we strongly recommend asking for an adoption fee (at least $75 for cats, $150 for dogs). This ensures that whoever adopts this pet will be able to afford to properly care for him/her and is committed to keeping him/her. We do ask that this adoption fee is donated to Homeward Bound (unless the animal posted is from another rescue or shelter) so that we can continue saving dogs and making sure they are all spayed/neutered, vaccinated, tested for heartworm/lyme disease, and given treatment for it if they test positive. Giving the pet "free to a good home" is NOT recommended. We've rescued so many dogs from horrible situations from these ads (go to www.petrescue.com/ library/free-pet.htm, www.animalaidsw.org /free.html, & www.hart90.org/GeneralInformation/ FreeToGoodHome.htm to learn more about the dangers of "free to a good home" ads).

ANIMALS NEEDING HOMES:

Blackie
Blackie: This totally cool Newfie/Retriever mix is Blackie. He is a 'senior boy' at the young age of 10. Sadly, Blackie was taken to the shelter the day after Christmas when his family moved from a rural area to town. It is so difficult for a senior dog to get adopted in a shelter. So Pet Pals For Life took Blackie into their rescue. Cindy has been fostering Blackie and has fallen in love with him because he is such a gentle dog that only wants to follow her around and wait for loves and pets. But Cindy has four large dogs of her own and Blackie does withdraw when they are all around. He just waits for his time alone with Cindy. Blackie is an easy dog with a wonderful curly coat and a beautiful head. Until he came to Cindy’s home for foster, Blackie has always lived outside. Now he is accustomed to being a house pet but still enjoys romps in the backyard. This 'young senior dog' acts like a puppy with his tail held high when he shows off for his foster mom. Cindy has considered keeping Blackie. But she has come to the decision that what Blackie really needs his own home where he doesn’t have to share attention with so many other house dogs. He has been vetted and is being adopted through PET PALS FOR LIFE, a non-profit rescue organization in Sioux Falls. For more information on this dog, please contact kadams4545@hotmail.com.

Peaches
Peaches: It is amazing what vetting after years of neglect and over breeding, in addition to love and tender care, can do for a little dog. We introduced you to Peaches (Pyper) after we rescued her from a shelter where she had been taken after being abandoned in a rural county in South Dakota. This tiny little dog needed major surgeries to repair the damage from years of breeding puppies for profit. She came through all the surgeries and was then placed into foster care with Kari and her family. Since then, Peaches has learned what it is like to be a pet, to be spoiled, to be part of a loving family, how to walk up and down stairs, how to eat from a bowl, all the things family pets should experience. Peaches' foster family has renamed her Pyper, and we are now looking for a new, forever home for this little dog with the sweetest face and disposition. If you would like to adopt this wonderful little girl, complete the adoption application which is accessed from our homepage at www.petpalsforlife.org/. Pyper lives in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. She has been vetted and is being adopted through PET PALS FOR LIFE, a non-profit rescue organization in Sioux Falls. For more information on this dog, please contact petpals@sio.midco.net.

Danny
Danny: Meet Daniel! Daniel is a sweet little guy who wants nothing more than to be loved. He is great with people and dogs alike. Daniel is ready to find his forever home will make a great addition to any terrier loving family. He's housetrained, house friendly, and use to living with humans 11 and up, other dogs, and cats as well in fostercare! Danny was litterally dropped on a doorstep in a basket with others of his family. We believe he came from a puppy mill, the horrors of which were recently highlighted on the Ophra Winfrey Show. Danny is happily adjusting to living a happy dog's life in foster care, but needs his forever family and home to to make the permanent change to trust and love! A NOTE FROM HIS FOSTER: Danny is very enerjetic, and physically affectionate. A fenced yard is a requirement for Dannys' happiness, and another dog be an asset although not a requirement! He is a very loving dog who wants to be close and in contact a lot. He seems to be quite smart and just wants someone to love him. I of course want him to have a very good home with just the right person! For more information on this dog, please contact bev@midwestanimalrescue.org.

Kenzie
Kenzie: Meet Kenzie, a 2 year old active and fun loving Pit Bull/Husky mix, probably a whole host of mixes in this girl. They all add up to a girl with a sense of adventure, a love of life, an enthusiasm for play, and a confident and friendly temperament. Kenzie is housetrained and crate trained already, and would love a home with another dog who likes to wrestle and run. She has not been with cats, and having Husky in her, probably would not do well with them. A home with an active person/other dog and a large fenced yard is ideal. Kenzie is a snuggler, and loves to bring her toys to share with you. For obvious reasons, all animals adopted from Homeward Bound MUST live indoors only. Dogs over the age of 6 months are spayed/neutered, vaccinated, and tested for heartworm/lyme disease. You can email Katie at kadams4545@hotmail.com for more details, as well as pre-adoption questionnaire information.

Molly
Molly: Good golly, it's Miss Molly! Molly the 5 year old Lab mix is exceptionally bright, alert, almost human in her personality. Miss Molly here is hoping with all 4 paws crossed that somewhere out there is an adult home with a fenced backyard for her to join. She had a bad experience with kids as a puppy (assumed) and lives in fear of kids. She has no desire to run out and hurt anyone, but will bite a child if cornered. She tries her hardest to avoid situations with kids. Molly is wonderful with adults, and has the most perfect house manners you have ever seen. Housetrained, not a chewer, barks when appropriate (she is a great watchdog). Molly prefers to be the only dog in the home, she likes to be the "queen of the castle." If you have a quieter adult home willing to go through some socialization classes with Molly and help her find a peaceful balance, she will repay it in spades. We can promise you won't find a dog easier to train or more receptive to learning... she knows basic commands and a neat trick. Molly is trained to invisible fence currently, but feels more secure in a physical fence when outside. For more information on this dog, please contact fish3948@msn.com. Molly is current on her vet work.

Sargent & Pepper: Sargent and Pepper are two absolutely adorable, friendly, and outgoing littermates that narrowly escaped euthanasia in a TX shelter. These gorgeous hounds are approximately 1 months old and about 50 lbs. each. Although they are enjoying their stay in foster care, they would really like a forever home with a loving and responsible owner. These two hounds love to cuddle with the best of them, but also love to romp, frolic, and play at the dog park. They will need significant exercise to show their true potential since a tired hound is a happy hound. Due to the social nature of these hounds, we would like to place them either together or separately with someone who already has a resident dog for companionship. These two pups are quickly catching on to household manners and housetraining. A home with a six foot fence would be ideal for these two. Hounds tend to be escape artists, so they need to have a safe environment. With the proper precautions in place, a hound can truly be your best friend. These two have not yet been introduced to cats and we would prefer they go to a home that is cat free. A home visit and references will be required. We are asking a rehoming fee of $100 each that can be refunded upon successful completion of an approved obedience course with the adopted hound/hounds. These pups are spayed/neutered, vaccinated, and microchipped. You may email ghans@earthlink.net or call (952) 649-1510 for more information.
