It wasn't easy when Cheryl Adams of Monticello began rescuing dogs from pounds seven years ago.
"The first few times I did it, I came home and had nightmares. The ones we left behind would haunt me," said Adams. "Now the trick is: Don't make eye contact. But I still feel some animals are euthanized because of my decision, and that's hard."
Adams is the founder of Minnesota Homeward Bound, one of a few non-profit agencies that strive to move abandoned pets out of pounds, where many are ultimately destroyed, and into permanent adoptive homes. None of their pets are euthanized.
Adams cares for up to 30 dogs at a time on her hobby farm. She works with other temporary "foster" homes, a staff of volunteers and metro area Petco stores, and has placed more than 5,000 dogs, cats, hamsters, ferrets and other pets with adoptive households.
She found her calling first by working at a veterinary clinic, then at the Wright County Humane Society. When she and others found homes for 39 dogs taken from an illegal puppy operation, she started taking dogs home from area pounds.
"What I want to say to people is, 'Make sure you're willing to make this a lifetime commitment - and spay and neuter,' " Adams said.
One of Adams' adopters and volunteers is holding a benefit yard sale Wednesday and Thursday at 6402 Timber Ridge, Edina.
Meanwhile, those interested in adopting "rescued" pets can call Pet Haven (612-831-3825), Homeward Bound (612-721-0275), Canine Rescue (612-985-3423) or Second Chance (651-771-5662).
