Homeward Bound is dedicated to rescuing homeless and unwanted animals. We are a non-profit, 501(c) 3-tax exempt, no-kill
dog rescue and placement organization based in Minnesota. Although our focus is primarily on rescuing dogs, we also
rescue cats, kittens, & other animals. We are an independent organization and depend solely on
adoption fees, fundraisers, and donations to operate. We receive NO government support. Homeward Bound has been in operation since
1991 & has placed over 12,000
dogs in loving homes. We try our best to match the dogs with the needs, wants, personalities, and lifestyles of potential adopters to
ensure a healthy, happy, & permanent home. All Homeward Bound dogs must live indoors. Dogs are social pack animals by nature and we want them to be able to have all of the companionship,
love, & attention they deserve, as well as a chance to bond with the family.
We rescue all types of dogs, ranging from small to large breeds. Roughly 40% of the dogs we rescue are purebred while the other 60% are mixed breeds. The age of the dogs varies from puppies to adults. We will tell you about each dog's history, personality, & behavior, including whether or not they are good which children and other pets, their exercise needs, & other important information.
Each week, new dogs are rescued and we hold pet adoptions every Saturday at a Petco location from 11:30a.m. - 4p.m. in the Twin Cities area. Please see our Adoption Dates and Locations for more information.
NO PHONE ACCESS: Due to a medical emergency on the part of the director of Homeward Bound, phone calls are not able to be returned at this time except on an emergency basis. Please contact us through emails... we check them at least once a day. Contact emails include lberg05@comcast.net, jackiesinger@comcast.net, kadams4545@hotmail.com, and homewardbounddogrescue@yahoo.com (this is NOT the director's email) and any of us can help you. For medical emergencies, call Becker Vet at 763-261-5595. Thanks for your consideration at this time.
HOUNDS, HOUNDS, HOUNDS! Melting sad eyes, soft scratchable ears, goofy affectionate personalities - what more can you ask for in a companion dog? Homeward Bound has many hounds right now, and some of them have been with us a long time. Why? Well, here in Minnesota, Hounds get a bad rap. People seem to think that they are all loud, hard to train and completely uninterested in their people. That's breed profiling and nothing could be further from the truth. It's true that some Hounds bay, most are intelligent (which just means you need to change your training method) and all of our Hounds love people. We have small Hounds (Gueiseppe, Carson and Kit), medium Hounds (Atlas, Blaze, Collin, Darcy, Fred, Gibbie, and Snickers) and large Hounds (Huck, Montgomery and Porkchop). We have Hounds who love dogs best (Atlas, Bibble, Blaze, Huck, and Snickers) and those who love people more than anything (Atlas and Porkchop). We have Hounds who are fine with cats (Carson and Gueiseppe) and some don't even need fenced yards (Carson, Cheyanne and Darcy). Some Hounds prefer kids (Fred and Darcy), some prefer adults (Blaze and Montgomery) and some love everyone equally (Atlas, Collin, Cheyanne, Gibbie, Huck, Porkchop and Snickers). In short, we have Hounds for just about everyone. Some of our Hounds have been with us for such a long time and they continue to be passed over week after week. If you have room in your heart for a rescue hound, please email Jackie, who has two Hounds of her own and can talk to you honestly about the pros and cons of owning them. She can be reached at jackiesinger@comcast.net, and would love to introduce a new group of dog-lovers to the joys of hound ownership.
IMPORTANCE OF HEARTWORM & TICK PREVENTATIVE! We are amazed at how many people don't have their dogs on heartworm preventative. On average, Homeward Bound has to spend over $18,000 every year on heartworm treatment. The cost for treatment is expensive, starting at $350 per dog (and that is pretty cheap for heartworm treatment!). Many shelters/pounds/humane societies euthanize or refuse to take in heartworm positive dogs because treatment is so expensive but we at Homeward Bound feel no dog should have to die due to human ignorance. If you have a dog, you need to purchase heartworm preventative from your vet. Yes, it is kind of pricey but nothing compared to the cost of treatment. Please take a few minutes to read about heartworm by clicking on the following links: www.petplace.com/article -printer-friendly. aspx?id=327, www.avma.org/ communications/brochures/ heartworm/heartworm_brochure.asp, www.houstonsheltiesanctuary. com/HSS_Heartworm_Site.htm. If you would like to donate towards the heartworm treatment costs, please send donations to Homeward Bound, 6205 Kahler Dr., Albertville MN, 55301. Checks can be made to Homeward Bound Rescue and please note that it is for heartworm treatment. All donations are tax deductible. Wood Ticks - Be sure to buy your dog Frontline, ProMeris, or Revolution to prevent ticks (especially those with lyme disease). You must buy Frontline, ProMeris, or Revolution from your vet, Petco, or online. The flea/tick preventatives/sprays/collars/powders sold at pet stores, Target, Walmart, etc. are horrible and hundreds (if not thousands) of dogs have died or gotten really sick from them. You definitely get what you pay for so if you see a product with permethrin listed anywhere on the package, do NOT get it since that is a synthetic plant pesticide. It is a wonder that those are even made anymore since they have killed so many dogs but people keep buying them because they are cheap...

The first dog wash will take place Saturday, May 17th, from 9am-2pm at Normandale Park and Rec in Edina off of Warren Avenue and 6501 Normandale Drive. Our friendly volunteers will bathe your puppy/dog and doggie and people treats will be provided. The event is free, although donations are much appreciated and will go directly to Homeward Bound. We are suggesting a $5 donation. Reservations are not required and we will have these events no matter what the weather is like outside. The event will take place from 9am-2pm at the Normandale Park and Rec in Edina off of Warren Avenue. If you have questions, please call Cheri at 612-759-8982. WE NEED VOLUNTEERS FOR THIS EVENT! DOING SOME SPRING CLEANING? WE NEED GENTLY USED ITEMS: Help! Homeward Bound is running low on blankets, towels, comforters, sleeping bags, baby blankets, bathroom rugs, etc (even sheets will do). We use these to line the dog crates and the dogs sure do like them! We can always, always use dog / cat toys, rawhides/bones, kongs, leashes, collars, crates, etc. Please see our wish list for more information. Any of these items can be dropped off at the Petcos in Fridley, Maple Grove, Maplewood, and Burnsville. Thanks!
AFFORDABLE VET CLINICS, BOARDING KENNELS, GROOMERS & OBEDIENCE CLASSES? We are in the process of putting a list together of recommended vet clinics, obedience classes, groomers, and boarding kennels and we would love your input! Please send Megan an email at homewardbounddogrescue@yahoo.com if you have a favorite vet, kennel, or obedience class that not only is affordable, but also does a fantastic job. Please include the name of the place, phone number, and city/address. Feel free to send any other pertinent information as well. Thanks!
